ADMINISTRATIVE FELLOWSHIP

Administrative Fellowship:This program will train you in leadership, hospital management, and the administration of all aspects of an academic medical center. You will gain hands-on experience in managing clinical operations, patient care services, and strategic planning within a dynamic healthcare environment.
Administrative Fellowship in Health System Finance:This specialized program focuses on the financial aspects of healthcare administration. You will develop expertise in budgeting, financial analysis, revenue cycle management, and strategic financial planning, preparing you for leadership roles in health system finance.
BIODESIGN FELLOWSHIP
What could be more inspiring than the opportunity to develop transformative, life-changing technologies – from advanced devices to sophisticated digital solutions? That’s what’s possible through the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship. This year-long entrepreneurial program provides you with the chance to partner with a best-in-class interdisciplinary team to prototype and develop technologies to solve challenging healthcare needs. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SUMMER PROGRAM
Our summer employment programs are aimed at providing college students with real-life healthcare experience. It’s more than a job, it’s a true learning experience. Candidates for the College Student Summer Program must be high school graduates who are currently enrolled in college or current undergraduate students and demonstrate a passion for a career in healthcare. Volunteer experience is preferred.
WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT
The UCLA Health Administrative Internship is hands-on and action-oriented, giving you the knowledge and experience necessary to take on the challenges of tomorrow’s health care field. You will be exposed to every area of healthcare delivery, attend regular meetings with senior leaders and project sponsors, and be involved in a variety of enterprise-wide projects and initiatives. At the end of the program, you’ll be able to showcase the knowledge and skills you’ve gained by presenting your project to UCLA Health senior leadership.
This year, we are excited to offer up to fifteen internship opportunities within key departments across our system. Individual department leaders will serve as your preceptors and guide your project work. More than that, the entire Administrative Intern cohort will learn with one another through a myriad of shadowing experiences, executive-facilitated discussions, and other community-building events.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship is a 12-month project-based and action-oriented program that encourages learning across all aspects of health care delivery. During your Administrative Fellowship, you will serve as a member of Richard’s senior operations leadership team, share recurring individualized meeting sessions with him, and experience executive-level decision making throughout the organization in your various meetings and projects.
Drew Weil, Director of Hospital Operations at UCLA Health, also works closely with the Administrative Fellows and Richard Azar to customize the fellowship experience, coordinate experiential learning, and guide the day-to-day aspects of the fellowship.
With our flexible structure, you will get to see and experience all areas of UCLA Health including the hospital system, ambulatory sites, faculty practice group, and shared service departments which compose our organization. Each project will have a sponsor who will work with you on project definition, execution, and dissemination of results.
At the conclusion of your journey at UCLA Health, you will have gained marketable core competencies in four major areas:
- Healthcare administration knowledge, including operational planning and system improvement in a hospital, clinic, and academic setting
- Interpersonal and communication skills while working with physician and administrative colleagues on various projects

As a Finance Administrative Fellow, you will attend various executive leadership meetings, be involved in a range of enterprise-wide financial projects and initiatives, and lead different finance-focused projects for the organization. Each Administrative Internship position will have their own department-specific preceptor. This person will help assist Administrative Interns throughout the summer and provide coaching and guidance on a day-to-day basis. In addition to these preceptors, Richard Azar, the COO of UCLA Health serves as the Executive Sponsor to the Administrative Internship program.
How will I be paired with a department’s Administrative Internship position?
At the time of application, applicants will select the top four departments where they’d like to complete an Administrative Internship at UCLA Health. After all interviews have been completed, the applicants will create their ranked list of preferred internship placements. With this information, we will be able to find pairings that maximize the applicant’s and department’s preferences.
What is the duration of the Internship? Is it paid or unpaid?
The Administrative Internship is a 10-12-week paid program.
When does the Internship start?
The start date for all Summer Administrative Interns is late May to early June.
Who is eligible to apply for the Internship?
Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s program with projected graduation in or after September 2024.
How many interns does UCLA Health hire?
We plan on hiring up to 15 interns next summer.

The UCLA Health Undergraduate Student Summer Internship program is an exciting 10 week summer program designed to provide exposure to professional careers in healthcare, obtain work experience and develop work habits and communication skills that can be helpful in shaping future career interests.
Who is eligible for the program?
Applicants must be current undergraduate students or be graduating high school seniors and enrolled in an undergraduate program.
I was a part of the program last year. Am I eligible to return?
Unfortunately, no. We want to provide this experience to as many individuals as we can in order for new individuals to gain the perspective that past students have and to enrich our organization with new perspectives each year. This will also mirror our Graduate Administrative Internship which is a unique, one-time experience.
Is this a paid program?
Yes, the hourly wage is $20.00.
How many hours will I work a week?
You will work no more than 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, during normal business hours.
When will I need to be available?
Employees are expected to be available for 10 weeks beginning the first week of June through August. Flexibility can be accommodated to students who are on a quarter system.
How are students selected for this program?
Selection is based on the needs of UCLA Health departments. Departments request students with specific skills and knowledge areas or who have a strong interest in a particular field.
How many students will be selected?
Each department will indicate their interest this year regarding the number of interns they will be accepting. During the application process, you will be asked to provide your top three choices and, if offered, we will do our best to place you in an area that you have selected.

UCLA Health launched the ValU Care Redesign Department in 2014 to deliver the highest value of care possible. Our mission comes with one overarching mandate: always put patients and their families first.Potential Projects: The intern will likely contribute to one of our larger clinical care pathway projects around Chest Pain, GI Bleed, and tentatively CHF and Syncope. These projects typically entail data analysis, workflow process mapping, and engaging with end-users and clinical teams. |

Grace Jennings
Grace joins UCLA Health after she completed her Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree from The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Grace has previously worked as a Nursing Administration Intern at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago where she was responsible for piloting a nursing mentorship program for clinicians of diverse backgrounds. In this role, she also strategized retention efforts around the Certified Nursing Assistant role and supported the deployment of Lean within nursing departmental goals. In the UIC MHA Program, Grace served as the student leader for the Chicago Healthcare Executives Forum (CHEF), a local chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Through this leadership opportunity, she organized a networking event for Chicagoland students aimed at introducing non-traditional healthcare administration opportunities. During her last semester, she was awarded the ACHE Health Studies Student Award. Over the past six years, Grace worked for the Ronald McDonald House Charities across Illinois, allowing her to learn from families and support their healthcare journeys. Grace’s healthcare interests include patient & family experience, ambulatory services, international patient services, and improving access to healthcare. In her free time, Grace enjoys paddle boarding & exploring Southern California.
Hannah Reynolds
Hannah Reynolds joins UCLA Health following the completion of her Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Originally from Ohio, Hannah earned her Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology from the University of Cincinnati. Her professional background includes working as a patient care nursing assistant, where she assisted with daily living activities, monitored vital signs and glucose levels, and supported the clinical team in providing patient care. She also served as an emergency department scribe, gaining insight into ED operations and the process physicians follow to treat patients. This role sparked her passion for advancing health equity and addressing systemic healthcare challenges. Most recently, Hannah was part of the International Operations Business Development Team at Cleveland Clinic, where she conducted market research, vetted potential clients, and developed a consultancy package for Cleveland Clinic’s Global Patients Services. Hannah is dedicated to enhancing healthcare access, process improvement, and exploring opportunities in international health, strategy, and growth. In Hannah’s free time she enjoys playing beach volleyball and trying new restaurants.
Rian Ellis
LCDR Rian K. Ellis is currently assigned to Baylor University through the Army-Baylor Master of Healthcare Administration program and is serving as a fellow within the UCLA Health Healthcare Administration Fellowship. With over 10 years of distinguished service as a United States Coast Guard Officer, LCDR Ellis most recently served as the Chief of Enforcement at Sector Jacksonville, FL. In this role, he led Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE) operations across North Florida and Southern Georgia. His responsibilities included managing security boardings, fisheries enforcement, overseeing three patrol boat assignments, and maintaining relationships with federal, state, and local partners. He also served as one of three Search and Rescue Mission Coordinators within the Sector Jacksonville Area of Responsibility (AOR). Previously, LCDR Ellis served as a Command Duty Officer at District 17 (D17) in Juneau, AK, where he developed and executed Search and Rescue missions and supported two sectors in the D17 AOR. At Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, WI, he served in the Incident Management Division as the Assistant Chief of Incident Management. During his tenure, he qualified as a Pollution Responder, Boarding Team Member, and a 45’ Response Boat-Medium (RB-M) Boat Crew Member while on temporary duty at Station Sturgeon Bay, WI. LCDR Ellis graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in Business and Economics, where he also played baseball as a relief pitcher. He is a proud graduate of Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, VA. Originally from Grand Haven, MI, LCDR Ellis is married to his high school sweetheart, Suzanne Ellis. They have been married for over eight years and are proud parents to their three-year-old son, Noah, and their two beloved beagles.
Josh Reeves
Josh Reeves is a Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Administration candidate at the Baylor Hankamer School of Business through the U.S. Army-Baylor Program. Josh is an active-duty U.S. Army Major with ten years of experience leading healthcare personnel in conventional, airborne, and special operations units as a Platoon Leader, Medical Operations Officer, Company Commander, and Chief of Strategic Medical Plans. He most recently served as the Medical Operations Officer for 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) located in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, assigned to the Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility, encompassing the Middle East and parts of Central and South Asia. While assigned this role, Josh modernized medical intelligence collection practices for operational application and assisted the Group Surgeon with daily management of the Group’s primary care clinic. Josh claims Colorado Springs, Colorado as his hometown and earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice & Criminology from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Josh’s healthcare interests include identifying efficiencies in improving cost, quality, and access to care and promoting community health. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons, playing golf, snowboarding, and watching football.

The UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship Programs are overseen by senior leadership.
Richard Azar, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of UCLA Health, serves as the executive sponsor for the Administrative Fellowship, providing guidance and preceptorship throughout the year. Drew Weil, Director of Hospital Operations, works closely with Richard to customize the fellowship experience and manage the day-to-day aspects of the program.
For the Administrative Fellowship in Health System Finance, both Richard Azar, COO, and Tammy Wallace, Chief Financial Officer of UCLA Health, provide executive sponsorship and preceptorship. Drew Weil collaborates with Richard and Tammy to tailor the fellowship experience and oversee its daily operations.
How are the Administrative Fellowships structured? Is it rotational or project-based?
The UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship and the Administrative Fellowship in Health System Finance are both 12-month, project-based programs.
In the Administrative Fellowship, the Fellow will have the opportunity to experience all areas of UCLA Health, including the hospital system, ambulatory sites, faculty practice group, and shared services. Project selection is guided by both the Fellow’s interests and the institution’s needs.
In the Administrative Fellowship in Health System Finance, the Fellow will focus specifically on UCLA Health’s financial operations, gaining experience in areas such as budgeting, financial analysis, revenue cycle management, and strategic financial planning. As with the general Administrative Fellowship, project selection is driven by the Fellow’s interests and institutional priorities.
Is the Administrative Fellowship a paid position?
Fellows are considered full-time employees and are paid a salary for the 12-month duration of the program. As such, the Fellow is eligible for employee benefits including health insurance coverage, retirement savings, and paid time off. For more information, please visit www.uclahealthcareers.org.
How many Administrative Fellows will UCLA Health hire for the Fellowship year?
UCLA Health anticipates hiring two Administrative Fellows this year, one of which will have an emphasis in health system finance. In addition, since 2013, UCLA Health has partnered with Army-Baylor to provide an Administrative Fellowship position to an active-duty military officer completing their MHA. Upon completion of the 12-month fellowship, the Army-Baylor Fellow returns to a military position.
What specific graduate degrees are accepted for application to the program?
MHA, MBA, MSN, MPH, MHI or Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited program. Graduate programs with a required fellowship or residency prior to graduation are eligible.
Will UCLA Health accept Administrative Fellows who obtained their graduate degree in previous years?
We welcome applicants with a variety of experience, including those with work experience as well as recent graduates. The UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship is typically geared toward early careerists.
Are international applicants eligible for consideration?
UCLA Health does not currently offer visa sponsorship for the Administrative Fellowship.
Can applicants submit materials electronically?

Potential Projects: The Communications summer intern will have a unique opportunity to participate in all disciplines in our department. Information Services & Solutions (ISS) Virtualization Platform Services | Executive Sponsor: Sergio Gallegos – Associate Chief Technology Officer Preceptor: Hai Tran – Senior Manager, Hybrid IT Systems Management Overview: The Virtualization Platform Services team provides compute hosting for the enterprise, including the EPIC EMR system. We are hosting 95% of UCLA Health total compute workloads. This internship provides the opportunity to learn about our virtualization platforms, deployment automation, Disaster Recovery, and business continuity. Potential Projects: Potential projects and activities include: datacenter visits, annual audit, inventory updates, CMDB consolidation, Wiki designs, project documentation, automation, and system discovery. |
Mobile Device Team | Executive Sponsor: Aaron Magpali – Director, Customer Service Delivery Preceptor Arif Gheewala – Program Manager Overview: The UCLA Health IT Mobile Device Team manages mobile devices and users for the Enterprise, which includes Hospital, DGSOM, FPG and Campus using UCLA’s MDM Software, troubleshooting mobile devices associated to hardware and MDM software, procuring and managing mobile devices for the enterprise, and supporting various device platforms, such as, but not limited to iOS, Android and Windows. We at the Mobile Device Team handle many high profile projects like upgrading iPhones, swapping out physical pagers with paging apps on iPhones as well as providing iPhones to the incoming House Staff/Residents/Attendings. Potential Projects: The residents/medical students/fellows onboarding brings a rush of new devices getting iPhones/Pagers and returning of old devices. The intern will assist with this endeavor. |
Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital | Executive Sponsor: Steve Cohen – Senior Director Preceptor: Monica Dela Cruz – Operations and Budget Manager Overview: The Operations intern will report to the Operations and Budget Manager. Shadowing opportunities include daily operations, biweekly data transparency, bi-weekly strategy development involving planning process for the new Mid-Wilshire Hospital. Potential Projects: Develop marketing plans for the UCLA Psych App to patients and family members. Assist in developing workforce planning for the new hospital. |
UCLA Health Information Technology (UHIT)/Office of Health Informatics and Analytics (OHIA), Solutions Architecture and Engineering | Executive Sponsor: Albert Duntugan – Chief Data Officer, UCLA Health Preceptor: Muneeb Wani – Manager, OHIA Solutions Architecture & Engineering Overview: The team is in-charge of Compute and Data Infrastructure for clinical and research analytics uses cases, which include High Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence, (AI), Machine Learning (ML), etc. The team is comprised of Application Developer, Architects and Engineers. The team is responsible for the core foundational Cloud platforms and Evaluating technology concepts, Architecting Solutions, Build Environments, Developing APIs, applications and also developing integrated solutions for the vast clinical and research use cases and initiatives. UCLA Health Information Technology (UHIT)/Office of Health Informatics and Analytics (OHIA), Machine Learning Engineering | Executive Sponsor: Albert Duntugan – Chief Data Officer, UCLA Health Preceptor: Tim Sanders – Manager, OHIA Data Governance Overview: The OHIA Machine Learning Engineering team is directly involved in all aspects of the AI/ML lifecycle, from interfacing with data scientists, writing code for production, and monitoring, maintaining, and retraining existing production models. The team uses a combination of SQL, Python, and Java for their software development and ML projects. The OHIA ML Engineering team also is responsible for developing and socializing OHIA’s MLOps practices across the UCLA Health IT (UHIT) organization. Potential Projects: We will plan to involve our intern in 1-2 current projects. Given the focus of the team, these projects will involve components of the OHIA machine learning and data governance offerings but will also be tailored to the specific intern’s interests.
